Life Legacy
Sterling – Dr. James P. Barbato, 74, passed away after a short illness on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at Saint Vincent Hospital, Worcester. He was born in Worcester, the son of James and Dorothy (Manna) Barbato and has lived in Sterling for many years.​He is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Ann (Brideau, Milliard) Barbato of Sterling; sons, Mark Barbato of Leicester, Steven Milliard and his wife, Donna of West Boylston, and Brian Milliard of Leominster; grandchildren, Allison Milliard, Joseph, Michael and Kate Barbato; his sister, Joan Champagne and her husband, Ray of Lancaster; his brother, John Barbato of Auburn; several nieces, nephews and cousins.​Dr. Barbato graduated from St. John Preparatory School in Worcester. He earned an A.B. from Assumption College and a M.A. from Clark University both in education. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in geography from Boston University.​Professor Barbato was a member of the Geography department at Fitchburg State University where he taught for 30 years. He was an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Seaport Flotilla, Auburn, MA, where he served as Education Officer. Dr. and Mrs. Barbato were owners of the Sterling Meetinghouse Newspaper.​Relatives and friends are invited to attend Memorial Calling Hours from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at the Miles-Sterling Funeral Home and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Rd., Sterling.
