STERLING – Jack J. Helander, 89, passed away in his home on Sunday, December 9, 2012. Born Jakko Johannus Helander in Finland, he was the son of Toivo and Lyyly (Virsu) Helander.
He leaves his partner of 31 years, Irene E. Camerano; a niece, Michelle Braconnier with whom he lived; and his son, Roy Helander and his wife Linda of Florida. His infant daughter, Maria and son, John who served in Vietnam, predeceased him.
Jack graduated from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He was a registered professional engineer and worked at Norton Co. for 28 years where he built factories all over the world as far away as India.
Jack was an avid skier, achieving first place in the state downhill and eighth in the country. He was happiest when he was building and always creating new projects around his home. He was a member of the Eight Point Sportsmen’s Club in Sterling, a 32nd Degree Mason with the Boylston Lodge of Masons in West Boylston and the Sterling Senior Center.
Many thanks go out to the Summit Eldercare Facility and the home health aides who were all so kind and took such good care of Jack during his illness.
In keeping with Jack’s wishes, there will be no calling hours and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sterling Senior Center, 1 Park St., Sterling, MA 01564. Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Rd., Sterling is assisting the family with arrangements.
