Biography
WORCESTER - Irving Witkes, 87, died on Saturday, August 2, 2014, at home after a long illness.
His wife of 60 years, Leah (Rafer) Witkes, died on May 7th of this year. He leaves two sons, Howard Witkes and his wife, Alice, of Boston and Neil Witkes and his wife, Ann of Gladwyn, PA; and 4 grandchildren, Samantha, Jason, Alex and Michael Witkes. He was predeceased by his sister, Gloria Rosenblum.
He was born in Worcester, and was the son of Alexander and Faye (Sadowsky) Witkes, and was a lifelong resident of Worcester. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines.
He was one of the founders of Rome Building Products in Worcester back in the early 1960's, a family business which is still in existence today, retiring in 2000. He graduated from Wentworth Institute in Boston. He was a member of Beth Israel Synagogue, the Jewish Healthcare Center, B'Nai Brith and was a longtime member of Mount Pleasant Country Club.
FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT 2:00 P.M. ON MONDAY, AUGUST 4, IN BETH ISRAEL SYNAGOGUE ON JAMESBURY DRIVE, IN WORCESTER, UNDER THE DIRECTION OF RICHARD PERLMAN OF MILES FUNERAL HOME, HOLDEN. Burial will be in B'Nai Brith Cemetery, Worcester.
Memorial Observance will be held through 8:00 p.m. on Monday at the Jewish Healthcare Center, 629 Salisbury St., Worcester.
