WEST BOYLSTON – Nancy Irene (Dunbar) Hawley, 80, of Monticello Avenue, beloved wife of Bradford F. Hawley, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 in Tufts Medical Center, Boston after open heart surgery.
She leaves her beloved husband of 58 years, Bradford F. Hawley; a son, David T. Hawley and his wife Martha of Sterling; a daughter, Pamela K. Hogan of Hubbardston; a sister-in-law, Barbara L. Nichols and her husband Edward of Riverside, Connecticut; four grandchildren, Jeremiah T. and Shane F. Hawley and Taylor B. and ReAnnen M. Hogan; and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Philip Dunbar and a sister, Charlotte D’Amore predeceased her. She was born in Worcester the daughter of Rufus and Gladys M. (McNeil) Dunbar and lived a short time in Paxton before moving to Worcester.
Mrs. Hawley graduated from Bancroft School in 1948 and attended the Knox School in Cooperstown, New York. She graduated from Becker College in 1951 with a degree in Secretarial Science and worked at the Persons Majestic as secretary to the President, Charles Persons. Later she worked as a secretary to the librarian, Clifford K. Shipton at the American Antiquarian Society. She then married and became a devoted wife and mother living her life with incredible grace and decorum. She also worked for the family business, Howard Products, Inc. Nancy spent many summers filled with fond memories at the family camp in Rutland, known as Bear Hill Farm and later at the camp that Nancy and Brad owned in Hubbardston called Hawley’s Comet and at “the Cape House” in North Falmouth. She enjoyed over 25 years of sailing the waters of Cape Cod and the Gulf of Maine with her husband and family.
Mrs. Hawley was a member of the First Congregational Church in West Boylston, the West Boylston Historical Society, the Worcester County Power Squadron, the Ecotarium, the Tower Hill Botanic Garden and a Friend of The Beaman Memorial Library. She was a former Girl Scout Leader in West Boylston and former member of the Worcester Art Museum, the Beaman Oak Garden Club and Old Sturbridge Village.
A memorial service for Mrs. Hawley will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 8th in the First Congregational Church of West Boylston. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Congregational Church of West Boylston, Memorial Fund, 26 Central Street, West Boylston, MA 01583. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling.
