Ila L. (Schmachtenberger) Ketonen

October 29, 1919 — December 2, 2004

RUTLAND – Ila L. (Schmachtenberger) Ketonen, 85, of 185 Glenwood Road, died at home on Thursday, December 2, 2004, after an illness.

She leaves her husband of 62 years, Tauno Ketonen; her son, John T. Ketonen and his companion Holly Kennedy of Barre; Katherine R. and her husband Leroy C. Clark of Rutland; 3 grandchildren, Heidi King of SC, Tammy Moore of Princeton, and Kym Clark of Fitchburg; and 5 great-grandchildren. She was born in Denver, CO, the daughter of Herman and Blanche O. (York) Schmachtenberger, and lived in Rutland for the last 60 years. She was a Women’s Army Corps veteran of World War II. She was a graduate of West High School in Denver and received her bachelors and masters degrees in education from Worcester State College.

Mrs. Ketonen was an Elementary School Teacher in Hubbardston for 23 years, retiring in 1987. She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Worcester, the Rutland Grange, Finnish American Club of Rutland, and the Quabbin Retired Teacher’s Association. She was a charter member of Opera Worcester, and enjoyed traveling with her husband throughout the U.S., Europe, Canada, and Mexico.

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Ketonen will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 11, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte 122A), Holden. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
