Norman I. Carlson

RUTLAND/GARDNER – Norman I. Carlson, 71, of Timpany Boulevard, Gardner and formerly a 27-year resident of Rutland, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 in Henry Heywood Hospital, Gardner.

He leaves his beloved wife of 52 years, Delores E. (McKay) Carlson; two sons, David A. Carlson and his wife Deborah Stanley of Rutland and Kenneth W. Carlson and his companion Carol MacCulloch of Templeton; four daughters, Simone Chmielewski and her husband Jim of Missouri, Teresa Belton and her husband Paul of Worcester, Karen Barber and her husband Duane of Rutland and Kristin Carlson and her husband Denis of Quebec, Canada; two sisters, Joan R. Nelson of Cape May, New Jersey and Audrey A. Person of Bar Harbor, Maine; eight grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Gary Dupuis.

Norman was born in Worcester, son of Folke K. and Rita J. (Peterson) Carlson. He was a graduate of North High School and Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1958-1959 in the 820th Combat Support Group as a jet engine mechanic.

He worked as a Quality Control Engineer for Astra `Pharmaceutical in Worcester for 21 years, followed by nine years at Norton Company in the same capacity. Most recently, he worked in the electronics department at Walmart in Gardner. For many years, Norman was a member and former chairman of the American Society of Quality Control. He served on the Rutland Planning Board, Rutland Fire Brigade and was a member and one-time chairman of the Rutland School Committee.

Norman was a devoted father, an avid gardener, and outdoorsman who loved all animals. He cherished his time with his family and will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 17th, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Burial will be private. Please omit flowers. Donations in Norman's memory may be made to the City of Gardner Shelter Fund, 95 Pleasant Street, Room #29, Gardner, MA 01440.
