Hyman L. Cohen

Biography

WORCESTER – Hyman L. Cohen, age 96, died on Friday, July 28th in the Jewish Healthcare Center.  He leaves four nieces, Phyllis Mellman, Sybil Klein, Alice Plotkin, and Margaret Nelson; two nephews, Arnold Cohen and Robert Nelson; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.  He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and was a son of Isadore and Esther (Applebaum) Cohen. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati and received a Masters Degree in Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis.  During WWII he was a radar mechanic in the Army Air Force, serving in the European Theatre. For many years he was the assistant to the executive director of the Jewish Family Service and was in charge of the case work program. He then served as the executive director of the Jewish Family Service in Toledo, Ohio until his retirement, when he returned to Worcester.  He was a member of Temple Emanuel Sinai, Jewish War Veterans and Worcester Lodge of B’Nai Brith. He was one of the founders of the W.I.S.E. program, the Worcester Institute for Senior Education.  FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT 2:00 PM ON SUNDAY, JULY 30TH IN THE JEWISH HEALTHCARE CENTER, 629 SALISBURY STREET, WORCESTER UNDER THE DIRECTION OF RICHARD PERLMAN OF MILES FUNERAL HOME OF HOLDEN. Burial will be in B’Nai Brith Cemetery. Immediately following the interment service at B’Nai Brith Cemetery, Memorial Observance will be held at the Jewish Healthcare Center, 629 Salisbury Street.  Memorial Contributions may be made to the Morris H. Cohen Scholarship Fund, Clark University, 950 Main Street, Worcester, MA 01610.
