KERRVILLE, TX– Gordon H. Weymouth, 84, of Kerrville died peacefully on Sunday, August 8, 2010 in the River Hills Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Kerrville, after an illness.
His wife of 51 years, Jean E. (Cragin) Weymouth, died in 1999. He leaves two sons, Rod Weymouth of Augusta, Kansas and Donald Weymouth and his wife Amy of Holden, Massachusetts; a daughter, Virginia McClanahan and her husband Kevin of Maitland, Florida; six grandchildren, Brian Gentile and his wife Michele of Maitland, Tracy Gentile of Casselberry, Florida, Drew Weymouth and his wife Lauralynn of Rutland, Massachusetts, Elizabeth Weymouth of Auburn, Massachusetts; three great-grandchildren, Tyler Weymouth, Austin and Aiden Gentile; and his companion, Betty Aronsen of Kerrville. A sister, Helen Smith, predeceased him.
Gordon was born on July 20, 1926 in Springfield, Massachusetts and was raised in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, the son of Charles H. and Helen F. (Graves) Weymouth, Jr. He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II, serving in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre, discharging as a Steward's Mate First Class in the ETO. He received the American Area ribbon, EAME ribbon and the World War II victory ribbon. He lived 30 years in Meriden, Connecticut and 20 years in Gilford, New Hampshire before moving to Kerrville several years ago.
Gordon was a personnel manager at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, a division of United Technologies Corporation where he worked for 31 years, retiring in 1983. He wa a member of the the Center Congregational Church in Meriden, where he was a Deacon, assistant treasurer and chairman of the building committee. He founded and managed the Meriden Church Youth Duckpin League and for years, wrote articles on bowling for the "Meriden Record Journal".
He was a member of the Gilford Community Church, former member of the Gilford Rotary Club and former member, board of trustee's member and president of the Gilford Village Knolls. He was an associate member of the First Christian Church and was a volunteer docent at the Museum of Western Art, both in Kerrville. He authored a book, "RV Rambling in the USA" which was a compilation of articles written for weekly publication in the Laconia, New Hampshire paper where he lived previously.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 14th, in the First Christian Church, Kerrville. A second memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 2nd, in the Gildord Community Church, Gilford.
Memorial donations may be made to the First Christian Church, 1900 Goat Creek Road, Kerrville, TX 78028; or the Center Congregational Church, 474 Broad Street, Meriden, CT 06450; or the Wixson Memorial Garden Fund, Gilford Community Church, 19 Potter Hill Road, Gilford, NH 03249.
