WEST BOYLSTON – Duncan H. Urquhart, 86, of Yorktown Road, passed away on Tuesday, December 25, 2007 surrounded by his loving family in Saint Vincent Hospital, Worcester, after a short illness.
He leaves his wife of 62 years, Mary R. (Healey) Urquhart; two sons, Doug M. Urquhart and Brian R. Urquhart, Brian’s daughter, Lily A. Urquhart and her mother, Ann (Pratillo) Wilson all of West Boylston; a daughter, Laurie A. Owens and her husband David and their two daughters, Elizabeth and Arianna, all of Franklin. His brother, Kenneth M. Urquhart, predeceased him. He was born in Wilmington, Delaware, son of Kenneth and Florence (Kuntz) Urquhart. The family left Delaware for Massachusetts “one step ahead of the law” as Duncan tells it. They settled in Newton and Duncan graduated Newton High School where he met his future bride-to-be, Mary Healey. Duncan graduated college from the University of Massachusetts in 1949 with a degree in landscape architecture and worked for 30 years as Vice President of Bigelow’s Nurseries in Northborough, retiring in 1983. He also did woodcarving and participated in amateur building and finish carpentry around his home.
Duncan was a decorated World War II and Korean War veteran in the U.S. Marine Corps, discharged as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was a fighter pilot who flew Corsairs and saw military action in Okinawa and the South China Seas. Duncan was a golden-glove boxer and competed in several boxing matches while in the service. He was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church and the Harold N. Keith American Legion Post 204 in West Boylston.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Duncan’s family for calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, December 28th, in the Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. The funeral Mass for Duncan will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, West Boylston. Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, West Boylston.
