HOLDEN - Christopher H. Sotak, 59, of Kendall Road in the Jefferson section of Holden, passed away peacefully of a brain tumor in his home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, May 28, 2011.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Sotak, of Jefferson; three children, Derek Sotak of Shrewsbury, Onalie Sotak of Framingham, and Michael Sotak of Amherst; three brothers, Daniel Sotak, Matthew Sotak and Max Sotak; and two sisters, Anna Vindiola and Cynthia Vagnini. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was born December 13, 1951 in San Antonio, Texas, son of Veonor Sotak of Denver, Colorado and Katharine Glover of Cincinnati, Ohio. He received both Bachelors and Masters Degrees from the University of Northern Colorado, a Ph.D from Syracuse University and an M.B.A. from WPI. Upon completion of his Ph.D he worked for GE Medical Systems in Fremont, California and then, for the past 23 years, was a professor of biomedical engineering at WPI. He was also an adjunct professor at UMASS Medical School.
Chris was devoted to his family and his second love was mentoring young research scientists. He belonged to many professional scientific societies and served on editorial boards for peer reviewed journals. He loved to travel and was fortunate to visit many parts of the world. Christopher was a member of Wellspring United Methodist Church in Shrewsbury.
He and his family would like especially to thank both the UMASS Memorial Home Health/Hospice Care and Visiting Angels for their care and compassion during his illness.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 2nd, at Wellspring United Methodist Church, 440 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Interment will follow at Grove Cemetery, 1290 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1st at Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden.
