RUTLAND - Donald H. Sandstrom, 78, of Rutland, died unexpectedly on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at UMass Memorial Heathcare, Worcester.
Don was born in New Britain, Connecticut on September 28, 1931, the son of Eric and Pauline Sandstrom and lived in Rutland for 48 years. He leaves his wife of 55 years, Lurana H. (Morse) Sandstrom and three children; Donald R. Sandstrom and his fiancée Tammy Nedoroscik of Rutland, Laurel A. Locke of Rutland and close friend Marc F. Campbell of Cape Cod, and Cynthia J. Sandstrom and companion John Brule of Holden. He also leaves six grandchildren; Kristopher, Marcy, Alyssa, Donald "DJ", David, Alexis and five great-grandchildren. He also leaves a sister, Lois and a brother, John "Jack" Sandstrom of Holden.
Donald served in the Navy aboard the USS LOESER DE 680 as a Machinist's Mate 2nd Class USN-1 and was honorably discharged in 1954. He was presented with the National Defense Service Ribbon. He worked as an estimator and draftsman throughout his career while also working as an assessor for the Town of Rutland, most recently as an estimator for C.B. Blair Builders until his retirement.
Don enjoyed many summers at the beach, camping with his family, and boating in Point Judith, Rhode Island. He spent many winters vacationing in both Fort Meyers and Myrtle Beach. Don was an avid, amateur photographer and spent countless hours on the computer pursuing this hobby. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of Donald from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a memorial service on Wednesday, March 17 in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. Burial will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
