Howard E. Davis

RUTLAND – Howard E. Davis, 81, of 310 Main Street, died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, in UMass Memorial Medical Center, Worcester.

He leaves his wife of 55 years, Ruth E. (Walker) Davis; two sons, Gary A. Davis of Rockaway, New Jersey and Glenn H. Davis of Westminster; a daughter, Kathie R. Moskovitz of Norwalk, Connecticut; a sister, Bernice Boucher of Millbury; seven grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Howard was born in Oxford, son of Chester S. and Daisy M. (Case) Davis. He graduated from Oxford High School were he was Captain of the basketball and baseball teams. He was an Air Force Veteran of World War II and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.

Howard worked as a Machinist for Leicester Knitting for several years and after moving to Rutland in 1963, he worked for Duncan Gillies in West Boylston before retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Oxford Veterans of Foreign Wars and the First Congregational Church of Rutland. Howard had raised Hereford Cattle on his Spruce Hill Farm and haying was a summer ritual with his grandchildren and neighbors he recruited for the day. He was a skilled gardener and also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Howard and his dog took great pleasure in giving tours of the Farm and sharing country secrets with many visitors.

Howard’s funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 17, 2004, in the First Congregational Church of Rutland, 264 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery, 142 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland. Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 16, 2004, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Memorial donations may be made to the First Congregational Church of Rutland, 264 Main Street, Rutland, MA 01543; or to Sweetpea Friends of Rutland Animals Inc., 338 Pommagussett Road, Rutland, MA 01543.
