Howard J. Doyle

HOLDEN – Howard J. Doyle, 90, passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at Knollwood Nursing Center in West Boylston surrounded by the love of family. He was born and raised in Worcester, the son of Daniel F. and Clara E. (Auger) Doyle and moved to Holden where he resided for 60 years.
His wife of 62 years, Elizabeth “Betty” M. (Sasse) Doyle, “the love of his life”, passed away on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2012. He leaves two daughters, Maureen E. LaVigne of West Boylston and Laurie A. Smith and her husband Gregory of Jefferson; five granddaughters, Andrea LaVigne, Brieana Tascione and her husband Nick, Janelle Woodfall and her husband Justin, Caitlin Smith and Alexandra LaVigne; two great-granddaughters, Ashley LaVigne-Foley and Reagan Woodfall; and several nephews and nieces. Three brothers, Daniel, Clarence and George, four sisters, Frances, Mildred, Beatrice and Mary (Mae) all predeceased him.
Howard was a machinist mate first class with the U.S. Navy during World War II serving aboard the light cruiser USS Boise. He was on board the historic night of the Battle of Cape Esperance, Guadalcanal and was awarded the following medals, Asiatic Pacific Area, Philippine Defense, Philippine Liberation, American Defense, American Area, World War II Victory and the Good Conduct Medal. After honorably serving six years in the Navy, Howard went to work as a kitchen designer at Sawyer Lumber Company in Worcester. He later joined Heald Machine where he worked for many years before retiring in 1980. Howard was a proud graduate of Worcester Junior College. He enjoyed annual family vacations in Maine, traveling with Betty and tending to his vegetable garden alongside Betty’s beautiful flower garden.

Funeral services are private and will be held at the convenience of the family.
