HOLDEN - Horace J. Zona, Sr., 89, died peacefully on Friday, July 5, 2013, at the Golden Living Center in Worcester. Born in Dorchester, Horace was the son of John and Prudence (Scandora) Zona and lived in Holden for many years.
Horace was a graduate of Boston University Radio School and proudly served in the United States Army during World War II as a radio operator and gunner. He served with the 388th Bomber Group in the European Theatre and flew 25 missions aboard B-17s known as the “Flying Fortress”. After returning home from the war, he worked for the United Nations in New York and later at Fort Devens with his family. In 1956, Horace moved to Holden and opened Horace’s Barber shop on Main Street which he operated for over fifty years now run by his son and daughter.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Jefferson and was a former president of the Holden Lion’s Club.
His wife of 57 years, Elizabeth J. (McGovern) Zona died in 2000. He leaves five children, Jane Berbarian and her husband Robert of Arizona, Horace J. Zona, Jr. and his wife Mary of Holden, Deborah A. Fiske of Melbourne, Florida, Eileen D. Harrington and her husband Gary, and Nina M. Clapp and her husband David of Holden; many grand and great grandchildren. Besides his wife, Horace is predeceased by a son, George R. Zona. Horace spent the last several years of his life under the loving and devoted care of his son Horace and his wife Mary, and his daughter Nina and her husband David.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9, at St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton St., Jefferson. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Holden.
