HOLDEN – Albert H. Marick II, 80, of 20 Driftwood Drive, died Monday, May 14, 2007, in UMass Memorial Healthcare after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 55 years, Margaret (Scholar) Mirick; his son, Peter G. Mirick of West Boylston; a daughter, Kathryn R. Mirick–Kowaleski of Rutland; two sisters, Susannah Swihart of Casco, Maine and Sally MacAuslan of Bridgeton, Maine; five grandchildren, Carly and Chase Mirick, and Alex, Marina and Sam Kowaleski. His brother, Richard W. Mirick of Princeton, predeceased him. He was born and raised in Worcester, the son of George H. and Ruth L. (Goodnow) Mirick, and spent many summers at his family’s farm on Mirick Road in Princeton. He later lived in Athol and Raleigh, North Carolina before moving to Holden in 1967.
Mr. Mirick attended South High School in Worcester and graduated from Williston-North Hampton Academy in North Hampton. After graduating from high school, he enlisted into the U.S. Army and served in the Philippines in the aftermath of World War II. After his return, he attended and graduated from Williams College in Williamstown with a degree in History. Having enlisted in the ROTC program he then served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
Mr. Mirick began his business career working at the Whithall Carpet Mills in Worcester and later worked as the assistant treasurer at Athol Manufacturing where he worked for five years. In 1967, he and a partner founded Tyler-Mirick Vinyls in Athol. He later became Corporate Treasurer and Controller at New England Newspaper Supply Company in Millbury, where he worked until his retirement in 1982. After his retirement, he ran his own tax consulting business and was President of Acorn Railroad Construction in Worcester.
Mr. Mirick was an antique car enthusiast as well as founder and past president of the Wachusett Old Car Club. He had a passion for antique cars and particularly enjoyed restoring a 1938 Packard V-12 limousine and a 1941 Lincoln Zephyr V12. He was a past president of the Athol Lion’s Club, the Raleigh Lion’s Club and was a member of the Webster Square Lion’s Club. He enjoyed prospecting for various rocks and minerals, and was a collector of Lionel Trains.
A memorial service for Mr. Mirick will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 20th, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Burial will be private in North Cemetery, Mirick Road, Princeton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
