Hiram Bradford Gibbs

July 1, 1925 — January 14, 2018

AUBURN – Brad Gibbs, 92, passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at UMass Memorial Hospital in Worcester. He was born in Worcester, the son of Hiram and Mabel (Stockwell) Gibbs and had lived most of his life in Auburn.

His loving wife of 54 years, Muriel (Signor) Gibbs, passed away in 2003. He leaves three children, Jeffrey Gibbs and his wife, Christy of Rutland, Donna Grenier and her husband, John of North Oxford and Martha Vigeant and her husband, Wayne of Rutland; his sister, Elizabeth Miller of West Hartford, CT; six grandchildren, Michael Grenier, Marianne Borelli, and Tyler, Victoria, Olivia and Sophia Gibbs; seven great grandchildren; three nephews, Stephen Richards and Scott and Brad Miller. Brad also leaves his longtime companion, Mary Pat Spaulding of Athol with whom he shared many laughs, adventures and memories. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert Gibbs and his sister, Barbara Richards O’Brien.

Brad graduated from Classical High School in 1943 and received a degree in Electrical Engineering from Worcester Junior College and a certificate from the School of Industrial Management of Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He honorably and proudly served his country in the Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Following his time in the service Brad worked in advertising at Crompton and Knowles and Mass Tech in Worcester, and in 1993 retired from Reed Company in Holden.

As an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Brad served as a youth group counselor, Lay Leader, usher, Master of Ceremonies for church musicals and president of the Methodist Men’s Club. He had served as a member of the Auburn Board of Appeals and was a founding member of the YMCA Co-Wed Group which has continued to meet for more than 60 years. Brad was devoted to his family and enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing in the Wesley men’s softball league, and spending summers at the family summer home in Rutland. He is remembered fondly for his smile, humor, wit and strong handshake.

A memorial service for Brad will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 20, in the Wesley United Methodist Church, 114 Main Street, Worcester, MA 01608. A private committal service will be held at a later date at Hope Cemetery in Worcester. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Wesley United Methodist Church.
