PAXTON - Elton Heywood Schlegel, 74, of 25 South St., Paxton, died Sunday, January 27, 2008 in UMass Memorial Hospital, Worcester, after an extended illness surrounded by the love of his sons & daughters.
His wife of 42 years, Rachel J. (Laperle) Schlegel, passed in 1997. He leaves behind five sons, Richard G. Schlegel and his wife Monique of New Braintree, Glenn M. Schlegel and Eric J. Schlegel and his wife Wendy all of Ware, Wayne A. Schlegel and his wife Denise of North Brookfield and Russell J. Schlegel and his wife Traci of Paxton; two daughters, Wendy M. Schlegel and her fiance Jeffrey Jalbert of Paxton and Kelly A. Schlegel with whom he lived with also of Paxton; three brothers, Charles A. Schlegel of Massapequa, NY, Herman B. Schlegel of Worcester and Hugo E. Schlegel of Lexondale; 17 grandchildren; many nephews and nieces. His son, Douglas P. Schlegel, died in 1976 along with two brothers, Roy W. Schlegel and Edgar J. Schlegel, predeceased him. He was born and raised in Worcester, son of Joseph of Worcester MA and Alodia (Williams) Schlegel of Nova Scotia, and graduated from Worcester Boys Trade High School.
Mr. Schlegel owned and operated Schlegel Construction for many years. Previously he was a heavy equipment operator for the City of Worcester. He was a master tradesman and built his own home in the early 1960s where he and his family resided. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 29th, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. The funeral for Mr. Schlegel will be held from the funeral home on Wednesday, January 30th, with an 11 a.m. Mass in St. Columba Church, 18 Richards Avenue (Rte. 56), Paxton. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
