HOLDEN - Alden Hewes Wood, 97, of Glenwood Street, died in his home on Tuesday, July 14, 2009, surrounded by his children, after an illness.
His wife of 58 years, Virginia (Rodger) Wood died in 1997. He is survived by his son, S. Rodger Wood of Somerset, KY; two daughters, Patricia L. Wood of Florence and Nancy Wood Howe of Oakham; two grandchildren, Patricia H. Humphrey of Westminster and Andrew Howe of Oakham; two great-grandchildren, Paige and Colson Humphrey; and many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by a brother, Henry F. Wood. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Stacy H. and Alma F. (Hewes) Wood and lived in Holden for 56 years.
Alden graduated from Pelham High School in NY and Massachusetts Radio & Telegraph School in Boston. He was an Electronic Technician at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and taught silversmithing for the Worcester Craft Center and League of New Hampshire Craftsmen in Hanover. He was a member of the Chaffin Congregational Church and a past deacon. He also was a member of the W.P. I. Retirees Club and Central Mass Amateur Radio Assoc.
A memorial service for Alden will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 17, 2009 in the Chaffin Congregational Church, 155 Shrewsbury Street, Holden, MA 01520. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Chaffin Congregational Church, Memorial Fund. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, is directing arrangements.
