WORCESTER – Dr. Herbert “Herb” Erwin Rubin, lifelong Worcester resident, age 81, of Wrentham Road, passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 21st.

He leaves a long-time companion, Ghislaine Borno, also of Worcester; two sons, Blake J. Rubin and his wife, Lorraine of Holden, Jordan J. Rubin and his wife, Marci of Shrewsbury; brother, Dr. Judah Rubin and his wife, Kyla of Mashpee; five grandchildren, Jonathan, Eliza, Jaclyn, Aidan, and Hannah. He was predeceased by his sister, Miriam “Mim” Guterman and her husband, Dr. Burte Guterman.

Herb was a graduate of Classical High School with First Honors, Tufts University, and Tufts Medical School where he received a Doctorate of Medicine. After completing his residency in Baltimore, MD, he was the first neurologist to open a practice in Worcester. Over his 30 year career he treated thousands of patients. He also served honorably as a Captain and Physician in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Hood in Killeen Texas, during the Vietnam War. He was a long term member of the Worcester District Medical Society.

Herb was a devoted “papa” to his grandchildren and especially enjoyed attending their sporting events and spending as much time with them as possible. He was also an avid tennis and golf player, a member of the Holden Towers Tennis Club and played both daily. During his retirement years, Herb spent winters with Ghislaine in Naples, Florida where he was well known for walking the back nine daily after 3:00 at Cedar Hammock Golf and Country Club, and “chatting it up” with his neighbors. He was a prolific reader, making frequent visits to the Worcester and Naples Public Libraries. Herb was a passionate sports fan, who enjoyed watching the local teams and tennis matches.
