STERLING - Henry St. John Smith IV, age 66, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2024, at Holden Nursing Home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, Henry was the son of the late Henry III and Constance (Hunter) St. John Smith. In his formative years, the family relocated to Lancaster, MA, where Henry completed his elementary education and graduated from Nashoba Regional High School. He also spent two summers at Tabor Academy, an educational experience that sparked his lifelong passion for sailing.
At 18, Henry moved to California, where he worked as a glazier and eventually opened his own successful glass business. His dedication and strong work ethic were evident in every endeavor. After many years, he returned to New England, living in New Hampshire for a time before moving back to Massachusetts to reside with his sister, Ruth.
Henry is survived by his beloved siblings: Michael St. John Smith and his wife, Michele, of Vancouver, British Columbia; Ruth Meleen of Sterling; and Janet Jacobson and her husband, Derek, of California. He is also remembered by many nieces, nephews, several extended family members, and a close network of friends.
Those who knew Henry will remember him as a straightforward individual with sharp wit and a great sense of humor. He had a passion for the outdoors and cherished his time at his camp in Maine, where he created countless memories with family and friends. Among his many hobbies were sailing, golfing, riding motorcycles, and enjoying nature, along with a deep love for animals.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Henry's name to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) at ASPCA Gift Processing Center, P.O. Box 96929, Washington, DC 20090-6929.
