HOLDEN - Henry G. Birath, 91, died peacefully at home on Monday, December 1, 2014. Henry was born in Degersfors, Sweden, a son of the late George and A. Christina (Nyberg) Birath. At the age of 5, Henry immigrated with his parents and sister to the United States and they settled in Worcester.
Henry graduated from Commerce High School. He was a proud Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater with the 13th Port Surgical Hospital. Upon returning to the Worcester area, Henry began working for Norton Company in Worcester, and following a 30- year career there, retired as an engineer. He enjoyed travelling and dancing, was a member of the Frohsinn Club in Shrewsbury, the Greendale Retired Men’s Club and the Tatnuck Post, American Legion. He was also a member of Zion Lutheran Church for more than 50 years.
A single man most of his life, Henry finally met the love of his life, the former Mary J. (MacKintire) Barry, and they wed on September 11, 1999. They enjoyed travelling together and spent time in Florida for several years. Henry’s family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the doctor’s and staff with the East Mountain Street location of Summit Eldercare and especially, Leslie Bluette, for the tender and loving care shown to Henry during these last few years.
Besides his beloved wife of 15 years, Mary, Henry leaves his two step-sons, Kevin Barry and his wife, Alicia of Holden and Michael Barry and his fiancée, Sharon Lee Mulligan of Boylston; his step-daughter, Margaretellen Jolicoeur of Holden; his six step-grandchildren, Meagan Jolicouer, Patrick Barry, Sean Barry, Jack Barry, Jennifer Barry and Keegan Barry; his step-great granddaughter, Rowan Allen; his two special nieces, Carol Hescock and her husband, David and Janet Swenson; his grandniece, Kimberly Hescock; his two grandnephews, Jeffrey Hescock and his wife, Kelli and Christopher Hescock and his wife, Mary; his great-grand niece, Josephine Hescock; and his two great-grandnephews, Cale and Joseph Hescock. He was predeceased by his only sister, Helen Swenson in 1991.
Henry’s family will gather for a private service on Sunday, December 7, at Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. Burial with military honors will be held in All Faiths Cemetery, Worcester.
