Helen (Athenakis) Roumeles, age 99 of Worcester passed away on Friday, May 26, 2023 in Holy Trinity Eastern Orthodox Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Her husband of 25 years, John J. Roumeles, died in 1974. Born in Boston, she was a daughter of the late Costas and Maria (Georgalis) Athenakis. She graduated from Somerville High School and continued her education enrolling in extension courses at Harvard University. She was an administrative assistant at the Lever House in Boston.
Helen and her husband, John, were founding members of St. Catherine Greek Orthodox Church in Braintree, formerly in Quincy. Helen was a member of its Philoptochos Society, the Weymouth Garden Club, and volunteered at the South Shore Hospital.
Helen leaves a son, Dean J. Roumeles of Swampscott, and a daughter, Joan Constantinou and her husband, Michael of Worcester; 2 Grandsons, Andrew J. Constantinou and his wife, Rita of Peabody, Gregory C. Constantinou of Toronto, Canada; Granddaughter-in-law, Jenny Constantinou of Park Ridge, IL, 4 great grandchildren, Anastasia, Paul, Ioanna, and Michalis Constantinou. A grandson, Mark M. Constantinou and two sisters, Sevasmia "Toula" Christopher and Stella Milonas predeceased her.
Helen's family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Holy Trinity Eastern Orthodox Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the compassionate care provided to Helen, most especially, nurses Lucy, Zita, and Ruth, and CNA's Sara and Nadine.
Friends and family are welcome to greet Helen's family from 9:00 - 10:00 AM on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street, Worcester. The funeral service will follow at 10:00 AM in the Cathedral with the Rev. Fr. Christopher Stamas officiating. Burial will be private in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Boston.
