Helen M. (Thompson) Goodwin

RUTLAND – Helen M. (Thompson) Goodwin, 92, of 39 Highland Park Road, died Sunday, August 21, 2005, in St. Vincent Hospital, Worcester, after a short illness.

Her husband of 52 years, Thomas J. Goodwin, died in 1995. She leaves her son, Thomas J. Goodwin of Bethesda, Maryland; a daughter, Marjorie A. Goodwin of Brighton; a brother, Anthony Thompson of Barre Plains; and nine nephews & nieces. A brother, Felix Thompson, and a sister, Frances Vautrain, predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of John and Anna (Liutkevicius) Thompson. She was raised in New Braintree, graduated North Brookfield High School, moved to California during World War II, and moved to Rutland 57 years ago.

Mrs. Goodwin was a graduate and salutatorian in 1936 of the Rutland State Sanatorium Nursing Program and worked for them for many years, retiring from Rutland Heights Hospital in 1976. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Church and the Massachusetts State Retired Employees Association. She traveled extensively around the U.S. and enjoyed boating and fishing in her cottage in Wareham.

The funeral Mass for Mrs. Goodwin will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 25, in St. Patrick’s Church, 290 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Avenue (Rte. 56), Paxton. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 24, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Francis Home, Activities Fund, 101 Plantation Street, Worcester, MA 01604.
