Helen L. (Allen) Rugg

March 19, 1923 — January 14, 2016

STERLING - Helen L. (Allen) Rugg, 92, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 14, 2016 Oakdale Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in West Boylston, after an illness. She was born in Sutherland Springs, TX, the daughter of Herbert W. and Carrie B. (Perchard) Allen and has lived most of her life in Sterling. Her loving husband of 56 years, Harrison W. Rugg, Jr., passed away in 1999. She leaves a son, John A. Rugg and his wife, Denise of Worcester; two daughters, Cecelia J. Burgwinkle and her husband, Raymond of Leominster and Margaret L. Andrejczyk and her husband, William of Spencer; a brother, Herbert W. Allen of Hobbs, NM; thirteen grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Marion Tuttle of Sterling; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Gayle H. Upton and her brother, Fred Allen.Helen graduated from Hobbs High School in 1942. She worked in the cafeteria at Houghton School in Sterling for many years before her retirement. She was an active member of the First Assembly of God in Worcester where she often volunteered in the infant room. She was President of the PTA, active in the Club Scouts, 4H and volunteered at Sterling Healthcare, now Sterling Village. Helen loved to spend time with her family and friends. The Rugg family would like to thank the staff at Oakdale Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their love, compassion and exceptional care of Helen. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Friday, January 22, followed by a funeral service at 12 noon in the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family at Hillside Cemetery in Sterling. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Oakdale Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center, Activities Fund, 76 North Main Street, West Boylston, MA 01583 or to a charity of one’s choice.To share a memory or offer an online condolence, visit our guest book on this page.
