John H. Carlson

WEST BOYLSTON – John H. Carlson, 90, formerly of Lawrence Street, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday, February 11, 2011 in the Rose Monahan Hospice Home, Worcester, after a brief illness.

His wife of 54 years, Ellen P. (McMahon) Carlson died in 1999. He is survived by his three daughters, Johna M. Arello and her husband Philip and Nancy Ellen Schuster and her husband Victor, all of Princeton, and Carolyn M. Baker and her husband Robert of Sutton; a brother, Warren Carlson of West Boylston; a sister, A. Emily Fred of West Boylston; 6 grandchildren, Lisa and Jon Arello, Suellen Dumas, Victor Schuster, Christopher and Ashley Baker; 6 great-grandchildren; several nephews and nieces.

Mr. Carlson was born and raised in Holden, son of John W. and Dagmar E. (Carlson) Carlson, and lived in West Boylston for over 50 years. He was a graduate of Holden High School and attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He proudly served his country as a U.S. Marine and veteran of World War II receiving the Purple Heart after being wounded in Iwo Jima, Japan.

Mr. Carlson worked for Olson Manufacturing in Holden for 47 years, retiring as the Vice President in 1987. After his retirement, he continued working as a consultant for several years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Worcester, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6907 in West Boylston, the Holden Exchange Club and a past president of the National Screw Machine Product's Association. He was a 32 Degree Mason and was a member of the Boylston Lodge of Masons in West Boylston, Scottish Rite Bodies of Worcester, Aleppo Temple Shrine in Wilmington and the Worcester County Shrine Club. Mr. Carlson enjoyed spending time with his family. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as being an avid gardener and chef.

A private funeral service for Mr. Carlson will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 14th at Trinity Lutheran Church, 73 Lancaster Street, Worcester. A graveside service with military honors will follow at Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 73 Lancaster Street, Worcester, MA 01609; or St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
