WORCESTER – Harvey Gordon Goodwin, 89, of Briarwood Circle, died peacefully in the presence of his loving family on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 in Saint Vincent Hospital, Worcester. Born in Hartford, CT, he was the son of Harvey and Helen E. (Case) Goodwin, was raised in West Hartford, CT and lived 12 years in Holden and 25 years in Carolina Shores, NC before moving to the Briarwood Continuing Care Community two years ago.
He was a graduate of the William H. Hall High School in West Hartford and a 1945 graduate of Yale University in New Haven, CT. He taught computer science for 10 years at Southeastern Community College in Whiteville, NC. Previously he worked for several insurance companies in Hartford, and the Paul Revere Life Insurance Co. in Worcester from 1969-1981.
Gordon proudly served his country during World War II as a gunnery officer with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Henrico and the USS Rutland in the Asiatic Pacific Theater including Okinawa, Japan
He will be remembered as a kind, selfless gentleman who loved to laugh. A history enthusiast and veracious reader of any material on the civil war, a hobby he shared with his son, Harvey. He was proud of his ancestry as one of the founding families of Hartford, CT. Gordon loved to play golf, to sing, to get a good hand of cards while playing bridge, hot weather and dogs, most especially his “little girl”, Kendall.

He is survived and will be greatly missed by the love of his life for 61 years, Elizabeth “Betty” (Barrows) Goodwin; a son, Harvey Clayton Goodwin and his wife Marie of Shawsville, VA; two daughters, Amy Elizabeth Weymouth and her husband Donald of Holden and Laura Goodwin Lynch and her husband Robert of Southington, CT; 5 grandchildren, Drew Weymouth, Elizabeth Matos, Robert, William and James Lynch; 4 great-grandchildren, Braden Lynch, Clayton Matos, Tyler and Carter Weymouth. His sister, Patricia Goodwin Thompson, predeceased him.
A memorial celebrating Gordon’s life will be held on Sunday, May 6, at 2 p.m. at the Salem Covenant Church, 215 East Mountain St., Worcester, with the Rev. Mark Frykholm officiating. Reception immediately following at Briarwood. Burial will be private in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Briarwood Residents Assistant Fund, 65 Briarwood Circle, Worcester, MA 01606. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden.
