STERLING – Harry A. Sargent, of Sterling, MA, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, May 5, 2015. He was preceded to Heaven by his wife of 64 years, Clara “Eileen” Sargent. He leaves behind six children: Sandra Blanchard of NJ, Betty Weeden of RI, Kathleen Sargent of Sterling, Maureen Lovejoy of SC, Harry Sargent, Jr. of Sterling, and John Sargent of Sterling. He also leaves behind 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Harry graduated from Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, NH and Worcester Junior College. In 1942, Harry enlisted in the United States Navy and honorably served his country during World War II as a pharmacist’s mate until 1945. He served aboard the USS Benevolence, a hospital ship, in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre and was stationed in Tokyo Harbor during the surrender of Japan. After returning home, Harry went to work at Norton Company in Worcester where he worked for 35 years retiring in 1977 as an industrial engineer.
He was a member of the American Legion and a member of St. Richard’s Parish in Sterling. He served as a Eucharist minister, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also served on the Board of Selectman in Sterling.
He built, owned and operated Sargent’s Sterling Springs Campground in Sterling with his wife Eileen.
Harry loved to paint, but especially loved to carve. He donated a few of his carvings to the PBS Auctions and handmade toys to HIV infected children at UMMMC. He made the crosses used by the altar servers at St. Richards and started The Old Rugged Cross Society, where he made and donated crosses for the purpose of having the recipients pray for peace, the poor, the hungry, the ill, and the dying.
The family would like to express a special thanks and blessings to his faithful and loving caregivers over the past 6 years and also to Health Alliance Hospice.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Harry's family from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, at Miles -Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Rd., Sterling. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 15, at St. Richard of Chichester Church, 4 Bridge St., Sterling.
