ATHOL/STERLING -- Harry G. Hoaglund, 83, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 14, 2018 at Heywood Hospital in Gardner. Born Clinton and raised in West Boylston, Harry was the son of Harold and Bernice (Downey) Hoaglund and lived 53 years in Sterling before moving to Athol several years ago.
Harry attended West Boylston High School and honorably served his country in the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1957 and later from 1961 to 1962. He also served in the U.S Air Force Reserves for several years. Harry worked as a machine operator at Jamesbury Corporation in Worcester for over 20 years. He followed his dream of opening a martial arts studio in Worcester, Tracy's Karate Studio. He simultaneously owned and operated Harry's Diner on Front Street in Worcester.
He was an accomplished organist and played the organ on weekends at the Searstown Mall in Leominster. Harry enjoyed tinkering on his 1948 Plymouth Coupe Delux and was a member of the Mid-State Antique Auto Club in Fitchburg. Other interests of Harry's included deep sea fishing and working around his home in Sterling.
He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his beloved wife of 53 years, Deanna D. (Gregson) Hoaglund; two sons, Dean D. and Timothy A. Hoaglund both of Lancaster; a daughter, Holly Ann Senecal and her husband, John of Sterling; a twin sister, Barbara Crowley of Worcester; five grandchildren, Kayleigh, Eva, Nick, Catelyn and Tim; and a great granddaughter, Maeli. Besides his parents, Harry is predeceased by two brothers, Phillip Hoaglund and Duane "PeeWee" Hoaglund, Sr.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Harry's family from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 18, at the Miles-Sterling Funeral Home and Tribute Center. 100 Worcester in Sterling, followed by a funeral service honoring his life at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be held at 1 p.m. at the Massachusetts Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen St., Winchendon, MA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hiram O. Taylor Post 189, American Legion, P.O. Box 245, Sterling, MA 01564.
