Harriet Rose Strogoff

February 14, 1921 — September 15, 2022

WORCESTER - Harriet Rose Strogoff passed away at the age of 101 on September 15, 2022, at the Jewish Healthcare Center. She was born in Salem, MA, on February 14, 1921, the daughter of Isadore and Sarah Alpers.

Harriet is survived by her son, Joel, and his wife, Barbara, of Worcester, MA; her grandson, Adam Strogoff, also of Worcester; her granddaughter, Amanda Hayes, and her wife, Emily, of Media, PA; her great-grandchildren Masho, Avery, and Redeit Strogoff; and many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Harriet was predeceased by her beloved husband of 61 years, Judge Stanford Strogoff; her brothers Hyman, Bernard, Nathan, Phineas, and Joseph Alpers; and her sister, Ann Stull.

A graduate of Salem (MA) High School and Salem State Teachers College, Harriet earned a degree in the business program in 1943, with a specialty in bookkeeping. Before her retirement in 1983, Harriet worked for a number of businesses and organizations in Boston and Worcester, including The Owl Shop and Congregation Beth Israel. Harriet also worked at Boston's Embassy Pictures as the personal secretary of Joseph E. Levine, a film distributor and producer who was pivotal in the release of a number of hit movies, including "The Graduate." Harriet was an active member of both Hadassah and the Beth Israel Sisterhood, which she also served as Treasurer.

Greatly loved by others, Harriet always put the interests of others above her own; nothing was ever about her. She was the epitome of a caring, loving, and supportive wife, mother, and grandmother. She also had a wonderful sense of humor, which combined with her warm smile, helped to brighten the day of those who took care of her. Though soft-spoken, Harriet had a quiet strength that enabled her and others to get through any difficult times.

A wonderful cook and baker, an avid reader, a crossword and jigsaw puzzle enthusiast, and a loyal Red Sox and Patriots fan, Harriet further had a true passion for mah Jong. Above all, however, Harriet took great pride in the three generations that followed after her. She always viewed each succeeding generation as a special blessing, and her love for them, as great as it was, was no match for the love that she received in return.

The Strogoff family is grateful to Eisenberg Assisted Living and the Jewish Healthcare Center for the exceptional care that Harriet received during the last decade of her life.

Funeral services will take place at Congregation Beth Israel, 15 Jamesbury Dr, Worcester, on Sunday, September 18, at 3:00 p.m. followed by burial at B'nai Brith Cemetery, 55 St. John's Rd, Worcester.
