HOLDEN – Attorney John Harold Goewey, 81, of Surrey Lane, Holden, died peacefully on Saturday, April 17, 2010 surrounded by his loved ones.
John is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Gloria (Nelson) Goewey; his five beloved children, Mark Goewey and his wife Clare of Austin, Texas, COL Josh Goewey (U.S. Army) and his wife Lori of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Paul Goewey and his wife Anne of Hubbardston, Todd Goewey of Turner, Maine and Cara Goewey of Holden; and his six grandchildren, Johanna, Abigail, Nikki, Susanna, Emma and Sven.
John was born in Pittsfield, MA, the son of Judge Harold R. Goewey and H. Lois (Anderson) Goewey. Like his father, John had a passion for baseball, and between high school and college, John was recruited by Lefty Grove as a pitcher in the Cardinals organization. He declined the offer in order to pursue a law career. He earned a BA in Philosophy from Colgate University and was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Following graduation from Colgate University in 1951, he served as an Air Force officer during the Korean Conflict. He earned his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1956 and was elected Class Secretary. After graduation John clerked for Justice Harold P. Williams, in the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts. In Boston he worked as a trial attorney for Gaston, Snow, Motley & Holt. After moving to Worcester, he practiced with prominent law firms, and in 1973 established his own law office where he practiced until retirement. John also taught at Suffolk Law School and Clark University.
In addition to his professional career, he served the community through his local civic positions of Town Moderator of Holden and Wachusett Regional School District School Committee member.
John was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church as an active parishioner and Vestry member. He also actively served the Western Massachusetts Episcopal Diocese as Deanery Delegate, Diocesan Convention Delegate and Chancellor.
A Funeral Service and Celebration of John's life will be held at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 70 Highland Street (Rte. 31), Holden on Friday, April 23, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to St. Francis Memorial Fund, St. Francis Episcopal Church, 70 Highland Street, Holden, MA 01520 in John's name. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden is assisting the family with arrangements.
