HOLDEN – Guy C. Sproule, 96, of 92 Jamieson Road, died with his son by his side on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 in UMass Memorial Healthcare after a brief illness.
His wife of 57 years, Alice H. (Haskell) Sproule, died in 1995. He leaves his son, Guy “Cleve” C. Sproule, Jr. of Huntington Beach and Palm Desert, California; three nieces and a nephew. He is predeceased by his daughter, June A. Sproule of Surrey, Maine, four sisters, Evelyn L. Sproule of Springfield, Nova Scotia, Grace Mailman of Shrewsbury, Marie C. (Crouse) Mason of Amherst and Merna Clark of Bellevue, Ontario and a brother Clifton “Tip” H. Sproule of Truro, Nova Scotia. He was born in Springfield, Nova Scotia, Canada, the son of Hyram Y. and Effie (Grimm) Sproule, and lived many years in Holden.
Guy worked in Research and Development for Heald Machine Company in Worcester for 32 years before retiring in 1974. He was a 58-year member of the First Congregational Church of Holden and served on many committees as well as its board of deacons.
For over 50 years, he was a member of the Boylston Lodge of Masons in West Boylston, also a member of the Heald Hirams and the Greendale Retired Men’s Club. He was active in the Rice Elementary Schools Parent Teacher’s Association and served as its President for two years. Guy was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending summers at Moody Beach, Maine and at the southern shores of Nova Scotia.
The funeral for Guy will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Burial will follow in Grove Cemetery, 1290 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104-2396; or a charity of one’s choice.
