HOLDEN - Gustaf G. Gillberg, Sr., 81, of Holden, passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2023 at his home after a brief illness.
Born in Fitchburg, MA, he was the only son of the late Gustaf and Yvette Gillberg and grew up in Leominster, MA before moving to Holden in 1976. Gus graduated from the Leominster public school system and then attended college at Fitchburg State University. There he earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics and became a certified teacher in Massachusetts. He also earned a master’s degree in mathematics from Fitchburg State. He was employed by Wachusett Regional High School as a math teacher, where he went on to work for 37 years and continued to substitute teach for an additional 13 years, for a combined 50 wonderful years at Wachusett.
In 1975 he married the love of his life, Elizabeth (Betty) Gillberg, and they had 48 happy years together. Besides leaving behind his beloved wife, Betty, he is also survived by his two adoring children: Gustaf Gillberg Jr. and his wife Season of Rotterdam, NY; and his daughter, Gia and husband Michael of West Bridgewater, MA; and four grandchildren: Mia Gillberg, Noah Gillberg, Kenzie Ryan and Luke Ryan.
In his younger years, Gus was an avid skier, fisherman and golfer and loved spending time on Lake Winnipesaukee. Later on, he loved selling tickets for the sporting events at Wachusett and enjoyed summer vacations on Cape Cod. No one enjoyed the role of being a father and grandfather more than him. He had the best sense of humor and loved playing with his grandchildren. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his family.
Visiting hours will be held at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St. Holden, on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 from 3:00 to 5:00pm. The service following visiting hours will be private.
