WEST BOYLSTON/HOLDEN – Grace M. (Evans) Van Tassel, 87, of Briarwood Circle, West Boylston and formerly of Holden, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, July 2, 2012. She was born in East Nassau, New York the daughter of Erwin J. and Jennie (Gearing) Evans. Her loving husband of 68 years, Dr. Roger C. Van Tassel, Professor Emeritus of Economics at Clark University, passed away on March 23, 2012.
Grace graduated from Chatham High School in Chatham, New York and the former Albany Business College. She married Roger during WWII and always found a “room to rent” and worked in whatever town Roger was sent to when furthering his pilot training. After Roger was discharged from the military, they moved to Union College in Schenectady, NY, where Roger attended Union and Grace worked for the college. Later she typed for the General Electric News Bureau. When Roger was studying for his Ph.D at Brown University in Providence, she worked as a secretary to the Director of the Brown News Bureau and was an editorial assistant guiding the student newspaper.
They moved to Worcester when Roger starting teaching at Clark University and lived in Holden for over 58 years before moving to the Briarwood Community. Grace was an avid student at the Worcester Art Museum where she loved painting and creating beauty. Many of her paintings have been exhibited in the area. She was also an accomplished furniture restorer. When not taking care of her family, Grace was an active member of the Worcester Women’s Club, Garden Club and Horticultural Society, and she attended the First Baptist Church in Holden. She was a vibrant, energetic and strong woman who will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Van Tassel of Dudley; a granddaughter, Ashley Van Tassel; a brother, Harold Evans and his wife Pat of New Lebanon, New York; a brother-in-law, Alan Van Tassel of Germantown, New York; as well as 12 nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her son, Richard Van Tassel.
A funeral service honoring her life will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 9, at the First Baptist Church of Holden, 1216 Main Street (Rte 122A), Holden. Burial will follow at Grove Cemetery, 1296 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 480 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA 02472. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
