Grace F. (Cannata) Gray

December 31, 1929 — August 31, 2015

RUTLAND – Grace F. (Cannata) Gray, 85, and formerly of Holden passed away peacefully on Monday, August 31, 2015 at The Highlands, Fitchburg. She was born in Boston, daughter of the late Phillip and Concetta (Micciche) Cannata.



Grace graduated from schools in the Boston area. She studied voice as a young woman and was a talented lyric soprano. Following World War II, Grace’s unexpected introduction to a young Navy sailor, Charles Gray led to their marriage in 1947. Together, Grace and Charlie celebrated 68 years of marriage on Monday, the day she passed. They lived in Malden, Medford and Wakefield before settling in Reading where they raised their family. Grace and Charlie also enjoyed a country home in Meredith, NH where they relocated for 20 years before moving to Holden and Rutland in the past 10 years. Grace spent almost 20 years as a sales operation manager for the sales force at the Skyr brand clothing company before retiring. Grace and Charlie were charter members of Colonial Chorus in Reading. She used her beautiful voice as a member of the choir of the Lynnfield/Wakefield Methodist Church. She also enjoyed traveling, and visited Europe several times with Charlie.



In addition to her beloved husband, Charles, Grace leaves her daughter, Patricia A. Keay and her husband, Jeffrey of Sterling; her two sisters, Josephine Callahan of Florida and Joanne Kelley of Boston; her brother, Charles Cannata of Tennessee; her five grandchildren, Elizabeth Martin, Catherine Madrigal, Jennifer Collins, Robert Peterson and Matthew Peterson; her four great-grandchildren, Matthew and Julie Berube, Elida Madrigal and Christopher Collins; along with many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Janet Perez in 2008.



Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service celebrating Grace’s life on Saturday, September 5, at 11 a.m. at the First Church in Sterling, 6 Meetinghouse Hill Road, Sterling. Burial in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton will be private. Donations in Grace’s memory may be sent to the First Church in Sterling, P.O. Box 40, Sterling, MA 01564. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden is assisting the family with arrangements.
