Gloria L. Goewey

Gloria L Goewey, 91, of Holden Massachusetts died peacefully on January 26, 2023, with her family beside her. She was a devoted wife and mother of 5 children, so having her family along side her during her passing was truly a gift. Her family will miss her loving presence, but are grateful for their treasured memories of her life well-lived among them.
Gloria was raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts by her parents, Christian and Anna Nelson, along with her brother Christian Nelson Jr. She graduated from Cambridge High & Latin in 1948 and completed a two-year degree at Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Boston. She was a gifted pianist and was accepted into Berkley College of Music, but chose a different path. Her first job was as a secretary for American Research and Development Corporation which provided the capital investment for the tech giant Digital Equipment Corporation. Following the birth of her first and subsequent children she dedicated her life to raising her family. And in the latter years, once the children had grown, she committed herself to assisting her husband in his law practice.
In 1957 she married John H Goewey of Pittsfield, Massachusetts at Harvard University's chapel. They made their life together in Holden where they were deeply rooted and committed to the community of St Francis Episcopal Church. Gloria served many of those years on Altar Guild and helped with The Mustard Seed. In addition, they invested themselves in the Mercy Center, a Catholic Charity for people with developmental disabilities. Gloria also worked as an election pollster for the Town of Holden for many years.
Gloria is predeceased by her beloved husband, John Harold Goewey, of 53 years and her precious daughter, Cara Louise Goewey, her brother Christian Nelson Jr of Durham, Maine. Her father, Christian Nelson Sr of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and her mother, Anna Nelson of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
She is survived by her four sons, Mark Goewey and Clare Nelson of Austin, Texas, Josh and Lori Goewey of Tampa Florida, Paul & Anne Goewey of Hubbardston, Massachusetts; Todd and Rhaina Goewey of Turner, Maine. And by her grandchildren, Johanna Ottino, Abigail Goewey, Nicole Goewey, Susanna Goewey, Emma Goewey and Sven Goewey; and her great-grand children, Emily & Anthony Ottino; and her niece Susanna Euston of Arden, NC.
Her funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church, 1216 Main St, Holden on February 4, 2023 at 11:00 AM with a reception immediately following at the church. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Special Olympics Massachusetts, 512 Forest St, Marlborough, MA 01752 in Gloria's memory.
