HOLDEN – Gertrude “Gertie” R. (Leseman) Strait Valerio, 87, passed away at Sterling Village on Sunday, June 29, 2014 after an illness. She was born in Holden, the daughter of Roy B. and Mary A. (Dick) Leseman and graduated from Commerce High School and Anna Maria College.
Her husband of 12 years, Bonafacio “Ben” J. Valerio, passed away in 1982. She leaves five sons, Mark E. Strait and his wife, Carol of Rutland, Gary J. Strait and his wife, Lorianne of Triangle, VA, Jaye S. Strait and his wife, Patricia of Southbridge, Joel R. Strait of Holden with whom she lived and Kent D. Strait and his wife, Christina of Holden; two step-children, Robert Pelligrino and Lisa Schaffer, both of Orlando, FL; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen Strait Hardy of Rochdale; a sister, M. Louise Nelson of Millbury; a sister-in-law, Anna Leseman of Worcester; nine grandchildren, Jason, Shanna, Jessalin, Sandra, Jaye Jr., Zane, Cody, Casey and Kyle. Eight great-grandchildren, Genesis, Chloe, Collin, Piper, Ryan, Brett, Shylah and Mackenzie; several nephews and nieces; and her former husband, Richard P. Strait. She was predeceased by two sisters, Flora M. Kittredge and Roberta E. Reynolds; a brother, William E. Leseman; and her son-in-law, Jeffrey Hardy of Rochdale.
Gertrude was an administrative assistant for fourteen years at Berlyn Corp. in Worcester, retiring in 1981. Previously, she worked at Hobbs Manufacturing Company and for her son at Marco Polos, both in Worcester. She was a member of the Greendale People’s Church, the Holden Senior Center and enjoyed bowling, ceramics, reading, gardening and traveling. Above all, Gramma Gert loved and enjoyed her grandchildren and they loved her back each and every one of them. God Bless to all.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, July 7, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. Funeral services for Gertrude will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 8, in the Greendale People’s Church, 25 Francis Street, Worcester. Burial will follow at Grove Cemetery in Holden.
