WORCESTER - Gerald S. Thomashow, 93, died at the Jewish Healthcare Center on Wednesday, May 4, 2022. He leaves his wife of 72 years, Gloria (Steinberg) Thomashow of Worcester, Mass. He also leaves a daughter Nina Thomashow of South Portland, Maine, and a son Steven Thomashow and wife Nancy Fontanella of Cheshire, Mass. Two Cardigan Corgi's Rowain and Tallie brightened his days.
Gerald was born in Worcester, on February 12, 1929, to Maurice and Sarah (Starr) Thomashow. He grew up in Worcester and at 16 years old was granted permission to get a driver's license. After graduating high school, he started to work with his Uncle Edward Starr at Starr Scrap Recycling. He was involved in many organizations in the paper recycling industry and at one time was President of the Eastern Paper Mills Association.
He did not go overseas with the armed forces and felt he needed to give back. He joined the National Guard and was the only licensed crane operator in New England during Worcester's catastrophic tornado. Throughout his life he had a high regard for veterans. He was active in the Jewish War Veterans, and many other organizations including B'Nai Birth, Wounded Warriors, and WM Goodman and Sons Jimmy Fund Golf Tournament. He was an avid golfer and skier. Also volleyball and bowling. He loved history and museums.
Gerald was a good man (a mensch) to all. He had lifelong friends and family that meant the world to him. He loved learning and was the "senior" who set up all his friends' computers for them. His passions were reading, and working around his colorful garden and home. He loved driving. Anything from a golf cart to an 18-wheeler and sports cars, the faster the better.
He enjoyed visiting Portland, Maine and loved the Rocky Coast and the golf courses.
The family extends their appreciation to the Staff at Jewish Health Care. He was well-loved, and they took such good care of him. He was especially close with Tom and Kristy, and many nurses and aides. He had his sense of humor until his last day.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, May 6, 2022, at the Jewish Healthcare Center, 629 Salisbury Street, Worcester under the care of Richard Perlman of the Miles Funeral Home of Holden. Shiva will be held on the afternoon of the burial and will be announced at the time of the funeral. Burial to follow at B'nai Birth Cemetery.
