Georgienne (Durkee) Goodnow

January 22, 1934 — July 4, 2014

SHREWSBURY – Georgienne (Durkee) Goodnow, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 4, 2014, at the UMass Memorial Hospital, Worcester. She had lived in Holden and later West Boylston and Boylston for many years prior to moving to Westborough, and then to the Southgate community in Shrewsbury in 2009. She also had a summer residence in Sterling.



She was born in Shelton, Washington, a daughter of the late George E. and Neva (Baille) Durkee. She graduated from Pleasantville (NY) High School, The University of Vermont, Burlington, Vermont (1956) with a B.S. in Nursing and later earned her Master’s in Education at Worcester State University (1980). Georgienne was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority, and the Women’s Honorary Society of the University of Vermont.



Georgienne enjoyed a long career in healthcare and teaching. She began her career in Holden as a staff nurse at the Holden District Hospital, and later served as the evening supervisor. While at the hospital, she originated the Junior Volunteer Program and the Nurse’s Aide Course. She then became the health educator and elementary school nurse in the West Boylston School system, where she originated its Babysitter Safety course at the Junior High School, and was a member of Chapter 766 CORE Evaluation Team.



Outside of work, Georgienne spent many hours volunteering. She served on many boards and advisory groups throughout the years.



Georgienne was married in Pleasantville, New York on November 27, 1954 to the late Richard Needham Goodnow, who died in 2010. She leaves her four beloved children: daughter, Sharon A. Samuelson and her husband, Dana of Westborough, and their children, Corey and Tyler; son, Steven G. Goodnow and his wife, Janna (Christenson) Goodnow of Holden, and their children Ashley and Brandon; son, Roger N. Goodnow of Sterling; and a son, Richard J. Goodnow and his son, Kenny of Hubbardston. She was predeceased by her sister, Joyce Durkee.



A memorial service honoring Georgienne’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 26, in the First Congregational Church of Shrewsbury, 19 Church Road (on the common), Shrewsbury. Interment will be held privately at Hillside Cemetery in Sterling. Arrangements are in the care of the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
