STERLING – George “Pudge” V. O’Malley, 80, long time Sterling resident, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, March 6th at his home in Worcester. He was born in Clinton, son of the late Vincent O’Malley and Esther (McGilvray) O’Malley Poulin and graduated from Clinton High School in 1954. He will be missed by his son, Kevin V. O’Malley and his wife, Jen of West Boylston; his daughter, Tracy E. Corcoran and her husband, Bob of Medford; two sisters, Patricia Loverro and Cathy Valeri both of Clinton; and a brother, John Poulin of Clinton. He was a proud grandfather of his four grandchildren; Shea and Emma O’Malley of West Boylston and Timmy and Molly Corcoran of Medford. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. Pudge was predeceased by his loving wife, Martha L. (Peters) O’Malley in 2001. Pudge proudly served his country in the United States Army and then went on to earn his degree from New England School of Accounting. After graduation, Pudge worked for both Arrow Composition and Graphics East. In September of 1979, he and longtime friend, the late Will Cloutier, co-founded C.O.M.P., Cloutier and O'Malley Photocomposition. Pudge later retired from C.O.M.P. and joined the team at L.S. Starrett Company from which he retired in 2001. Pudge and his wife Martha raised their children in Sterling where he was very active in the community and youth sports. Pudge was part of the leadership team that founded George P. Gibbs Little League and enjoyed many years of coaching his children on the baseball and softball diamonds of Sterling. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed nothing more than being on the sidelines and proudly cheering for his grandchildren, no one was a bigger fan than Grampy! Pudge enjoyed playing pool and bocce with his friends. He had many good and long-time friends with whom he made wonderful memories. Later in his life he enjoyed many special years with his companion, the late Jeanne Cloutier. He and Jeanne especially enjoyed traveling to Florida for the winter and spending time with their families. Relatives and friends are invited to gather with Pudge’s family from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, March 10th at the Miles ~ Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 11th at St. Richard of Chichester, 4 Bridge Street, Sterling. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Jimmy Fund Clinic at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, in memory of George O’Malley to support pediatric cancer research and patient care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O.
