STERLING – George M. Pape, 75, passed away unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, October 28, 2014. He was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Harry and Katiena (Kapustianyk) Pape and had lived in Sterling since 1977.
His wife of 50 years, Tanya M. (Alkire) Pape, passed away in 2009. He leaves two daughters, Cynthia L. Chadwick and her husband, Richard of Shrewsbury and Gigi Schmutzer and her husband, Chris of LaCresenta, CA; a son, Edward H. Pape of Rutland; a brother, Carl H. Pape (Jinny) of Mission Viejo, CA; ten grandchildren, Kristi, Jennifer, Melanie, Eric, Katelynn, Meghan, Matthew, Jasmine, Stephen and Jessica; five great-grandchildren, Evan, Carlie, Katherine, Chole and Dean; nephews, nieces and his cat, “Big Willy”. He was predeceased by his daughter, Kathleen A. Rozanski and two brothers.
George enlisted into the service in 1957 and was a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was the national sales manager for Dyno One Inc., in Edinburgh, IN for the past thirteen years and was planning on retiring at the end of the year. He also owned Commercial & Residental Overhead Door Company for the past 22 years. George was a member of the Marine Corps League Worcester Detachment, #144, the Hiram O. Taylor American Legion Post 189, the 8 Points Sportsmen’s Club and was a former member of the Sterling Light Board. For almost 50 years, George loved dressing up as Santa Claus for children at Christmas, most recently for the Senior Center and the American Legion.
He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, but it was the time he spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren that he truly loved the most.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, in the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling. The funeral for Mr. Pape will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2nd at the First Church in Sterling, 6 Meeting House Hill Road. A committal service will be held at the Rock Island National Cemetery in Rock Island, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Worcester Marine Corps League Detachment 144, Scholarship Fund, 181 Lake Ave. Worcester, MA 01604.
