WORCESTER - George M. Bakes, 85, received his Honor Walk after peaceful passing on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at the West Haven VA Medical Center in West Haven, CT, surrounded by family.
Born in Lowell, MA, George was the devoted son of Greek immigrants Michael and Anna (Neofotistos) Bakes. George leaves behind his beloved brother, Nicholas Bakes, and his wife, Patty, as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, and their families: George and June Zapherson (Alex, Rachel, and Nicole), Chris and Tracy Loskant (Jake and Peter), Laurie and Frank Tomaszek (Zack and Annie-Jorden), Barbra Guiliotis, Michael and Gillian Zapherson (Christian, Michael, and Ryan), David Bulkley and Julie Yi, Ann Bulkley-Armour and Michael Armour (Kathryn and Grace), Nicholas Bakes, and numerous cousins.
In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by his loving sisters and their spouses: Joanne Bulkley (John), Helen Zapherson (Dino), and Patricia Loskant (Bob).
George was a man of integrity, compassion, and humility, who found strength and comfort in his Orthodox Christian faith. A devoted family man, he cherished every moment spent with loved ones, whether it was a weekly dinner or a festive holiday gathering. George was immensely proud of his Greek heritage and had a deep appreciation for history, politics, and the economy. A passionate sports enthusiast, he was particularly fond of baseball and remained a lifelong fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers. He passed this love to his nephews by gifting favorite team hats and teaching them to read sports page scores.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather with George's family on Saturday, February 1, 2025, from 8 to 9 am at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street, Worcester. A funeral service will follow at 9 am. Burial will take place at Hope Cemetery in Worcester.
