Garry M. Power, 83, of Holden, passed away peacefully at the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center in Worcester on Thursday, February 9, 2023 surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Garry was born on January 13, 1940 in Worcester to Maurice P. and Loretta M. (Van Herwarde) Power.
He graduated from South High School in Worcester, the Stockbridge School at the University of Massachusetts, received his BA from Northeastern University and his MBA from Anna Maria College. He proudly served in the U.S. Army in Korea and was employed 27 years at Commonwealth Gas Company, now Eversource Energy. Garry was a member of St. Columba Parish in Paxton where he formerly served on the Parish Council and collected for the Bishop’s Fund. He also proudly served for many years on the Boards of ATG fraternity and the All Com Credit Union. He assisted yearly in the planting of the James Crockett Garden in Boston and served on their Board.
Garry leaves his wife of over 55 years, Maryann (Hart) Power; his three children, Matthew Power and his wife, Connie of Aspen, CO, John Power and his wife, Mara of Worcester and Belinda Power and her husband, David of Merrimac; four special grandchildren, Jack Maurice and Tess Marie Power of Aspen, Zoe Ann Power of Merrimac and Charles Edward Power of Worcester. In addition, he leaves several close Power cousins and many close friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Maurice and Loretta, his sister, Joyce and four Power cousins, Edmund, Philip, Geoffrey and Joan.
He was an avid gardener, known for his Christmas trees (which he never sold but invited relatives and friends to cut), gladiolas, grapes for his wine and a large plot of vegetables, including his “special” tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, onions, kale, squash, pumpkins and pole beans. Each spring he meticulously planted and harvested his garden. His grandchildren have said, “There are no experts in this family except for Papa – he is an expert gardener!”
Garry relished traveling to all is favorite places including Ireland, Bermuda, Las Vegas and driving across the country, stopping in Colorado to visit with Matt’s family.
The family would like to thank Garry’s doctors and staff at Reliant Medical Center in Spencer (Dr. John Batbouta) and Holden (Dr. Stephen Smith); his neurologist, Dr. David Sommer; the Reliant Home Run Program; the staff and board at All Com Credit Union; his caregivers, Lily, Joseph, Lucy and Winnie; his faithful visitors, Gerry, Joe, Tony, Carlos and Jim; Mandy and Nancy from the Worcester VNA Hospice team, the staff at Notre Dame all for their loving care and companionship given to Garry.
Family and friends are invited to visit with Garry’s family from 9:00-10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 16, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden, before leaving in procession to St. Columba Parish, 10 Richards Avenue, Paxton, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am. Burial will follow in Mooreland Cemetery, Paxton. The family requests donations be made in lieu of flowers to St. Columba Parish, 10 Richards Avenue, Paxton, MA 01612 or to St. John’s Food for the Poor, 44 Temple Street, Worcester, MA 01604.
