STERLING - Dr. Frederick C. Herx, PhD, 87, retired professor of philosophy at the College of the Holy Cross, died suddenly on Monday, August 18, 2014 at the Clinton Hospital, Clinton.
Fred was born in Chicago, IL, a son of the late Frederick C. and Beatrice A. (Blais) Herx. He graduated from Loyola University of Chicago where he earned his Bachelors and Masters Degrees; he then earned his Doctorate from Notre Dame University. Fred proudly served with the US Army in occupied Japan following World War II. While teaching philosophy at Creighton University, Fred met his perfect mate, the former Mary Ellen Parquet, who was teaching there as well. He moved to the Worcester area to teach philosophy at the College of the Holy Cross from 1965-1985.
Fred and Mary Ellen were residents of West Boylston for 30 years before spending the last 20 years with their daughter and her family in Sterling. While in West Boylston, Fred, a man of tremendous faith, was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish and an active member of the West Boylston Ecumenical Council. He has been a member of St. Richard of Chichester Parish since he moved to Sterling. Fred was full of life right to the very end. He was a friend to all, young and old. Colleagues, students, extended family in the US and Canada, strangers he met while vacationing; even his grandchildren’s friends lovingly referred to him as “Grampa.” His laugh was constant and infectious: everyone enjoyed spending time with him. Fred’s caring and fun personality left an indelible mark on people. A wonderful cook, enthusiastic sports fan, avid crossword puzzler, a fantastic gardener who grew the best vegetables, Fred’s zest for new life experiences was insatiable. Fred was a world traveler who made sure his children and grandchildren experienced the culture of faraway places. He lovingly dedicated many years to care for his wife, Mary Ellen, who had been afflicted with Multiple Sclerosis. Together, they shared 50 years of marriage before her passing in 2012.
In addition to his beloved wife, Fred was predeceased by his only son, Frederick C. Herx III in 2012 and by his two brothers, John and Henry Herx. He leaves his two daughters, Mary Ellen Herx-Morrill and her husband, William of Mansfield and Anne M. Weaver and her husband, James of Sterling, with whom he lived; his daughter-in-law, Katrina (Cardoza) Herx of St. Augustine, FL; nine grandchildren, Elizabeth Lane and her husband, Matt, Michelle Zamudio and her husband, Regis, James F. and Stephanie Weaver, Emma, Jacob and Anna Morrill, Freddy Herx IV and Shawn Turner; his two great-grandchildren, Madison and Wesley Frederick Lane; as well as his two sisters, MaryBeth Miller and Helen Herdrick and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Fred’s family on Thursday, August 21, from 5-8 p.m. at the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. His funeral will be held on Friday, August 22, from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Richard of Chichester Church, 4 Bridge Street, Sterling.
