Frank G. Gustafson

September 22, 1917 — November 21, 2014

HOLDEN - Frank G. Gustafson, 97, passed away peacefully at home on November 21, 2014 with his daughter by his side. He was born in Worcester on September 22, 1917, the son of Charles A. and Elsie (Erickson) Gustafson and has lived in Holden since building his home in 1946.



His wife of 67 years, Lillian M. (Hultman) Gustafson, passed away in 2010. He leaves a daughter, Faith M. Gustafson of Holden and several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by two brothers, Carl and Walter Gustafson and a sister, Betty Gustafson.



Frank attended Worcester schools and graduated from North High School in 1936 as class president. He played football, baseball and was captain of the basketball team. He graduated from WPI in 1940 where he played football and baseball. He was elected captain of the football team after the 1938 undefeated season. He was a member of Skull and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and received the Intelligent Effort award at graduation. Frank served his country during World War II and was sent overseas to England with the 352nd Fighter Group where he was promoted to captain before being discharged from the military in 1945.



In his early work career, he was employed by the Grinding Wheel Institute Trade Association as technical assistant. Frank joined Norton Company in 1952 and worked as supervisor in sales engineering and process engineering. He retired from Bay State Abrasives as senior sales engineer. His hobbies during retirement included, fly fishing, golf and working on his home.



He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Worcester where he taught Sunday school and served on the council. When he moved to Holden he was a member and served on the council at Immanuel Lutheran Church. He and his wife were active in many programs at the Holden Senior Center including delivering meals-on-wheels and Frank serving on the new building committee.



Frank will be interred at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon with military honors on December 5, 2014 at 10:00a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 346 Shrewsbury Street, Holden, MA 01520.
