STERLING - Francis E. Lepore, a columnist for the Clinton Item, died peacefully on Saturday, January 14, 2012. He was eighty-seven.
Born in Clinton in 1924, the son of John Lepore and Concetta Cecchini, Lepore grew up on the neighborhood called “the Acre” where, in 1935, he formed a softball team called the Winter Street Supers. Tuesday nights, the Supers played cards: they have been playing cards, every week, ever since. Lepore graduated from Clinton High School in 1941. He served as a medic in the U.S. Army in World War II, after which he earned his B.A. from Clark University. He received his graduate training at Fitchburg State College, Boston University, and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He began a long and distinguished career in 1951, becoming a principal in the West Boylston Public Schools in 1955. Much appreciated for his wry humor and canny wisdom, he guided generations of students through school, and beyond. At West Boylston High School, he was for many years Director of Guidance. Beginning in 1981, he was Associate Director of Admissions at Assumption College, retiring in 1998. His column “Frankly Speaking” began appearing in the West Boylston Banner in 1978 and later in the Item.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Lepore, of Sterling; his brother, Dante Lepore, of Leominster; four children, Anne Cogswell and her husband John, Joan Skagerlind and her husband Gary, and Jack Lepore and his wife Janet, all of Holden, and Dr. Jill Lepore, of Cambridge; and thirteen grandchildren: John and Matthew Cogswell; James, Jenna, Kyle, Kevin, and Katy Skagerlind; Nicholas, Carly, and Paige Lepore; and Gideon, Simon, and Oliver Leek; and several nieces and nephews. A sister, Rita DiLorenzo, predeceased him.
He was a man renowned by all who knew him for his generosity, empathy, and abiding compassion.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, January 18, 4-7 p.m. at Miles Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 19, 10 a.m. at St. Richard’s Church, 4 Bridge Street, Sterling.
