WORCESTER – Francis J. “Nook” Comer, 87, of Pocasset Avenue, died under the care of his loving family on Thursday, March 8, 2012, at Autumn Village Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Worcester. He was born in Worcester on July 8, 1924, the son of Francis J. and Mary (Sullivan) Comer and lived here all of his life.
Franny graduated from St. Peter’s High School where he played varsity baseball and basketball. After graduating high school, Frank enlisted in the United States Army and honorably served his country during World War II with the 229th Antiaircraft Searchlight Battalion in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. Upon returning home, he met and married the love of his life, Mildred O. Hines of Worcester on June 2, 1952. He worked for Crompton & Knowles and later worked 30 years for the U.S. Postal Service in Worcester retiring in 1985. Franny loved all sports and played centerfield in the Worcester Industrial Baseball League including Crompton & Knowles. He was a longtime parishioner of Saint Joan of Arc Church in Worcester.
He is survived and will greatly missed by his devoted wife of 59 years, Mildred O. (Hines) Comer; two sons, Stephen E. and Francis J. Comer, both of Worcester; a daughter, Ann Marie Comer and her husband Dr. Quan Yang Duh of San Francisco, CA; six grandchildren, Stephen, Jacquelyn, Danielle, and Sean Comer and Katherine and Emily Duh; a daughter-in-law, Maureen Comer of Worcester; many nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by two brothers, Robert J. and John “Red” E. Comer and three sisters, Mary F. Carlin, Helen C. Gallivan and A. Louise Comer. He will be greatly missed by dear friends, Toni Thomas and Chris Pellerin.
Franny’s family would also like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff at both Autumn Village and Brookhaven Hospice who lovingly cared for him these last four months.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A funeral Mass celebrating Franny’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 12, at Saint Joan of Arc Church, followed by interment at St. John’s Cemetery both in Worcester.
