WORCESTER – Frances M. (Gullberg) Smith, 94, of Worcester passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at St Vincent Hospital, Worcester. She was born in Worcester on July 2, 1924, the daughter of Roy and Sigrid (Peterson) Gullberg.
Frances grew up during the Great Depression with her brother, Roy and homemaker/seamstress mom and postman/academic dad. After graduating from North High School she trained in nursing at Memorial Hospital, and went on to work there in surgical nursing and the ER. While working in the ER in the late 1940’s she encountered Russell Smith, an actuary at State Mutual Insurance Co. Through the next few decades Frances and Russell raised and educated a family of 3 children. Later, with the children on their own and professional success coming to Russell, there was travel as well as time to read and enjoy the arts. After Russell's death in 2014 and a number of physical problems, Frances continued to visit Newfound Lake in the summer and enjoy life at Rochelle St., where she continued to live until the end of this August.
Frances was predeceased by her beloved husband, Russell Smith in 2014. She will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Perry M. Smith and his wife, Eva of Wellesley and Roger M. Smith and his wife, Judy of Hamden, CT; her daughter, Nancy L. Smith of Millbury; her brother in law, Bruce Crawford of Sarasota, FL; her cousin, Phyllis Story of Altoona, FL; her nephews, Dana, Keith and Scott Crawford; her niece, Caroline Crawford; and her step granddaughter, Dawn Terrell of NH and her brother’s children in Texas.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend memorial calling hours from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, September 14th at Miles Funeral Home, 1148 Main St., Holden. Burial will be private.
