WORCESTER – Elizabeth (Riley) Foley Bruel, 86, of Worcester, formerly of Bronxville, New York, died Sunday, August 12, 2007, in her home surrounded by her loving family. She leaves her three children, Ann Marie Foley and her partner Deborah Rosa of LaPine, OR, John Paul Foley and his wife Janet of Holden, and Michael J. Foley of Lynn; as well as three grandchildren, Laura, John and Andrew Foley, all of Holden. She was predeceased by brothers, Lawrence Riley of Sedalia, MO, and Joseph Riley of New York, and a sister, Margaret Pando of New York.
Elizabeth was born on October 20, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY, to Lawrence R. Riley and Margaret (Burden) Riley. She attended Bishop McDonnell HS, Grace Institute in New York, the NY Institute of Dietetics and Iona College. She married John J. Foley, a maritime attorney, and raised three children in White Plains, NY. Ten years after the death of her husband John, she married Paul J. Bruel, DMD and DDS, of Crestwood, NY, and lived in Crestwood for 20 years.
Betty was employed for many years as a legal secretary at American Can Co. in Armonk, NY. She was a dedicated volunteer, working with disabled children at St. Agnes Hospital, and at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, a maximum security prison for women, taking care of inmates’ babies, and she volunteered many years in the Bargain Box at St. Lawrence Hospital. She was an avid traveler, visiting many locations in the United States and abroad. Betty was a devout Catholic whose faith guided and comforted her through life’s many challenges. She was an active member of the community, which included membership in the Bronxville Women’s Club. She enjoyed living in the Westchester area and had many dear friends. Betty moved to the Briarwood Retirement Community in Worcester in 2004 in order to be closer to her grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Mass for Betty at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 18th, in St. Christopher’s Church, 950 West Boylston Street (Rte. 12), Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Christopher’s Church, 950 West Boylston Street, Worcester, MA 01606. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden is directing arrangements.
