WORCESTER – Florence L. (Phaneuf) Lien, 102, died peacefully on Thursday, April 26, 2012 in the compassionate care of Notre Dame Long Term Care Center in Worcester. Born in Worcester on October 12, 1909, she was the daughter of Osias and Mary H. (Hippert) Phaneuf and after her marriage she lived 18 years in New York and 20 years in Auburn before moving back to Worcester in 1971.
Mrs. Lien graduated from Commerce High School and Fairchild Business School, both in Worcester, and worked many years as a legal secretary for the law firm of Anderson and Pentland in Worcester, retiring in 1973. Prior to her marriage she worked for the law firm of Parker, Milton and Reilly, also in Worcester.
In 2008, Mrs. Lien became part of the Notre Dame family in Worcester where she spent the last several years embracing her new friendships. Her family is most appreciative and grateful to the entire staff for their care.
During her stay there, Mrs. Lien frequently delighted the other residents and staff by playing popular songs of her era on the piano. Even at 102, she played with great vigor and spirit and had an inimitable style. She was a member of the Holy Family Church, formerly St. Joseph’s Church, in Worcester.
Her husband of 46 years, Erling E. Lien, died in 1981. She is survived and will be greatly missed by her two daughters, Nancy L. Fitz-Gerald and her husband Ward of Baltimore, Maryland and Lois L. LaCroix and her husband Joseph of Holden; three grandchildren, Kristin M. LaCroix, Marianne L. Doyle and her husband James and James L. Fitz-Gerald; two great-grandchildren, Thomas and Caroline Doyle; two nephews and a niece.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family from 9 to 10:15 a.m. on Monday, April 30, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, followed by a procession to Holy Family Church, 35 Hamilton Street, Worcester where a funeral Mass celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, 162 Webster Street, Worcester.
