Florence M. George

March 19, 1923 — April 4, 2015

RUTLAND – Florence M. (Van Holt) George, 92, a resident of Rutland since 1968, died peacefully on Saturday, April 4, 2015 at the Lutheran Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Worcester, surrounded by her loving children and grandchildren.

Florence was born and raised in the Far Rockaway area of Queens, New York, a daughter of the late George and Elizabeth (Carter) Van Holt, both Irish immigrants to the United States. Growing up in a strong, family oriented home and neighborhood gave Florence a background that shaped her entire life. She met and married the late Michael F. George and began raising their family in Queens, later moving to Smithtown, Long Island. Following Michael’s illness and death at the age of 46, Florence relocated to the Worcester area to be near family, settling in Rutland in 1968. Whether while working as a waitress at area restaurants or as a housekeeper for Oriol Healthcare in Holden, Florence’s desire was to create a wonderful, loving home for her five children through hard work, determination and perseverance. Her children all describe their mother as a woman with a quick wit, as well as one who was fiercely loyal and truly devoted to her family and friends. She loved tending to her flowers and maintaining her home, and enjoyed the company of all of her little puppies. Florence will be forever missed.

She leaves her five children; Michael T. George, Patricia A. Scales, Laura L. Jancura and her husband, Frank and Pamela K. Sackett and her husband, Rocky all of Rutland; her twelve grandchildren, Michael, Gabriel, Adam and Christopher George, Jeffrey and Elizabeth Scales, MaryRose, Thomas and Daniel Jancura and Vanessa, Tiffany and Jacob Sackett. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Michael F. George and her son, Wayne R. George. She was also predeceased by her two brothers, George and William.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Florence’s family on Wednesday, April 8, from 4-7 p.m. at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. Her funeral will be held on Thursday, April 9, from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, Main Street, Rutland. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery, Worcester. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Activity Fund, Lutheran Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, 26 Harvard Street, Worcester, MA 01609.
